Canon PowerShot SD750 7.1MP Camera 3x Optical Zoom Black

Posted by Bird in Digital Camera & Photo, Point-and-Shoots

canon girlCanon upgrades to the Ixus line include a DiGiC III image processor, and in the case of the Ixus 75, a 3-inch LCD screen. The new chip makes short work of full-resolution photos, which translates into faster response times – perfect for spur-of-the-moment, shoot-from-the-hip situations. The Ixus 75 also has face-detection technology, which, along with determining the focus point of the shot, adjusts exposure values and flash levels accordingly. The face-detection feature even tracks faces if the camera, or the subject, is in motion.

                                canon poweshot

With this model, Canon has moved away from the directional-style navigation pad to a touch-sensitive dial, which may take some getting used to. That learning curve however, flattens when you take a look at the 3-inch screen. The LCD is big, bright, and beautiful. The added real estate makes composing and reviewing shots a joy. What about the output? Colors are lifelike and usually sharp, except when shooting at higher ISO, with the flash turned off, but that is to be expected – after all, the Ixus is still a point and shoot, and not a DSLR. Aside from that, the only other quibbles are the lack of real-time indicators for battery level and a more powerful zoom.

The Ixus’ compact and durable alloy body, with a black ring accentuating the lens area, pays homage the days when the Ixus was an “idiot” 35mm camera. Make no mistake about it, however, the Ixus 75 is a touch of pure genius.

The Canon PowerShot S410 is a slightly upgraded version of the immensely popular S400 model, which has been discontinued and can be found for close to three-hundred bux. I think since the S410 is only slightly improved — it is slightly faster than the S400 and sports a new print/share button which I’m not sure you’ll be using a lot if you are the typical user — the S400 is a much better buy. That said, the S410 will be the new standard bearer for 4MP digital cameras. It has a compact form factor, although not as small or light as offerings from Minolta or Pentax or Casio, and it’s a bit heavier than you might have expected from the size. It puzzles me why Canon continues to use the older CompactFlash memory card as opposed to the more-standard Secure Digital format. Maybe they simply wanted to save money in upgrading the S4xx series. The plus side is, CF cards are a lot cheaper than SD ones for the same capacity, although the difference is shrinking as expected.

Canon PowerShot SD870IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black)

Posted by Bird in Digital Camera & Photo, Point-and-Shoots

The SD870 IS is about everything you could want in a compact point and shoot digital camera. It offers excellent image quality, a large vivid LCD display, intelligent defaults, fine low-light sensitivity, a high quality movie mode (with sound), an outstanding wide-angle lens and (most importantly for me) a photo capture speed that leaves many other digital cameras in the dust.

I cover a fair amount of electronics trade shows such as CES and CEDIA for my home theater site (Big Picture Big Sound), so I need a camera that is quick on the draw, has a good macro feature for close-ups, and has good low light sensitivity and zoom for distance shots at press conferences. But portability is also key, as I need to carry the camera around in my pocket along with other gadgets for note-taking. I’ve owned a Canon S400 Digital Elph for a number of years, and it has served me well, but the lag time between pushing the shutter button and actually getting a picture (particularly indoors) was frustrating, and the low light sensitivity is also fairly poor.

Canon PowerShot SD870IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver)

The Canon SD870 IS (known in Europe as the IXUS 860 IS and in Japan as the IXY Digital 910IS), announced in August, is a replacement for the SD 800 IS (IXUS 850 IS), one of last year’s most popular ultra compacts. It retains the SD800’s optically stabilized 28-105mm (equiv.) zoom lens, making it one of the only cameras in this sector of the market with this useful wideangle capability, and throws a few new or upgraded features into the mix, including improved Face Detection AF and red-eye reduction in playback mode, and Auto ISO shift. The other changes are fairly predictable, with a larger screen and just under one million extra pixels. 8.0 Megapixels and 3.8x zoom

Key differences compared to SD 800 IS

The Canon SD 870 IS is a distinctly gentle revision of the SD800 IS, launched around a year ago. It offers a larger screen than its predecessor but it loses the optical viewfinder to keep the overall body size virtually unchanged. It also gains a higher resolution sensor but loses out in terms of continuous shooting speed, with the frame rate dropping from 1.7fps to 1.3, suggesting the buffer has not been increased. Other noticeable gains include a useful user-definable function button, a touch control wheel and Auto ISO-shift function.
